Anson Call was born in Fletcher, Vermont, on May 13, 1810. In 1833 he married Mary Flint and they moved to a farm in Madison, Ohio. Call was raised in a Methodist family, but in 1836 was baptized into the Mormon faith by William Smith, brother of Joseph Smith. In 1838 the family moved to Far West, Missouri, where they faced continual religious persecution that resulted in the theft of their family farm.
